Automatic Watch Daily Care: A Practical Guide

Automatic Watch Daily Care: A Practical Guide

Everyday habits that make a difference

Start with the basics: wipe away sweat and dirt, keep the crown properly closed, and protect the watch from conditions that could damage it. Wrist movement winds an automatic watch, but it does not replace cleaning or maintenance.

• After wearing: Use a clean, soft cloth to wipe the case, case back, and strap or bracelet.

• After setting the time: Return the crown to its normal position. If it screws down, tighten it as instructed before exposing the watch to water.

• Before putting it back on: Check the strap and clasp. Have loose pins or cracked straps repaired or replaced.

• When storing it: Choose a dry spot away from magnetic clasps, speakers, and prolonged direct sunlight.

Clean the watch according to its materials

A dry microfiber cloth is a good first step. Whether you can use water or a soft brush depends on the case, strap, finish, and manufacturer's directions. A water-resistance rating doesn't make every cleaning method safe.

Metal watch case maintenance

The watch case comes into direct contact with the skin, and dirt and sweat often accumulate on the back of the case. We recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean stubborn dirt, while ensuring the watch head remains dry. Be sure to dry it thoroughly after cleaning. The TSAR BOMBA watch does not use a metal strap; our fluororubber strap can be rinsed directly with water.

Leather strap

Wipe away sweat stains from leather watch straps promptly and allow them to air dry in a well-ventilated area. Avoid soaking, swimming, or direct sunlight. Replace rubber watch straps immediately if they become brittle or cracked.

Keep perfume, solvents, and household cleaning products away from your watch. They may damage the case, strap, or seals. Stronger cleaners are not necessarily better.

Wind and set the watch gently

Your wrist movement winds the watch as you wear it. Leave it unworn long enough, though, and the power reserve will run down. Follow the movement's instructions to restart it; there is no single winding count that works for every automatic watch.

Take the watch off before winding it and turn the crown gently. Don't shake a stopped watch to start it. If the crown feels stuck or unusually resistant, don't force it.

Exercise extreme caution when adjusting the date. The calendar function will restrict quick date setting. Do not adjust the date between 9 PM and 4 AM. Please consult your watch's instruction manual. If you are unsure how to adjust the date, please contact our customer service.

Water resistance may decrease as seals age or are subjected to impact. Always close the crown before contact with water and do not operate any controls underwater. Do not wear your watch while showering, as steam, soap, temperature changes, and water pressure can all affect its water resistance.

Magnetic fields can affect timekeeping accuracy. Avoid placing your watch near speakers, magnetic clasps, or other strong magnetic fields. If your watch suddenly becomes less accurate, please consult our customer service to confirm if it has been affected by a magnetic field before deciding whether a full servicing is necessary.

Please store your watch in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and magnetic objects. While automatic winding is convenient, especially for complex calendar watches, it cannot replace proper care. If you wear your watch infrequently, we recommend using an automatic winding mechanism.

How often should an automatic watch be serviced?

We recommend that you have the movement inspected or serviced every 4 years to ensure its accurate operation.

Don't wait for a routine service if you notice moisture or droplets under the crystal, a serious impact, a malfunction, or damage to the bracelet. Have the watch inspected before wearing it again.

If the watch starts gaining or losing more time than usual, compare its performance with the specification for that movement rather than a single accuracy standard. Not every mechanical watch meets chronometer standards. Check it against a reliable time source, note the change, and describe it to the service technician.

A soft cloth, careful handling, sensible storage, and professional attention when needed go a long way. Keep the manual and service records, and never force a control you're unsure how to use.
