A watch movement, also referred to as a "caliber," is the device that powers the watch and all of its features. The hands are moved by this internal mechanism, which also powers any additional features, such as a chronograph, annual calendar, or dual time zone. It's impossible to wear a watch without a battery. A watch would not function without it.

Although watch companies have developed countless unique movements using their own innovations, all of these movements fall into one of two categories: mechanical or quartz watches.

Are you trying to keep up with all the terminology?

For those who are unfamiliar with the differences between quartz and chronograph watches, here is a quick guide to explain them.

Quartz watches

Quartz watches, also referred to as electronic watches, use a silicon dioxide crystal known as a quartz crystal that resists most solvents and     maintains its crystallinity at high temperatures. The quartz crystal serves as the precise resonator in this device. An electric charge is generated when quartz crystals are subjected to pressure mechanically, enabling the measurement of time by means of an ongoing electronic signal.

It is powered by a battery that charges and runs the quartz watch movement. An electric current is used to power a quartz oscillator, which produces vibrations of 32,768 Hz per second. This vibration is fed to a stepping motor and the gear train by a circuit that converts it into a signal.

Quartz Watch Advantages:

  •  Due to how rarely the mechanism deviates from the precise time, it provides an accurate time.
  • Unlike mechanical watches, quartz watches don't require as much upkeep because they have fewer moving parts and operate on a battery.
  • This is a more affordable timepiece because there are only a few moving  parts that may need to be serviced.
  • They're easy to use as watches anywhere at any time.

Timekeeping accuracy is a guarantee, but it is not always met. Temperature changes around us have an impact on the quartz crystal's ability to accurately deliver time because it vibrates at a slightly different frequency depending on the temperature. Changes in environmental temperature impact the ability of the quartz crystal to accurately deliver time because quartz crystals vibrate at slightly different frequencies depending on the temperature. In most cases, the error will be less than a second per day, so it won't matter much to most of us. If you need to have a great featured watch no matter what, then you should keep reading.

Chronograph Watches | Tsar Bomba

Chronograph Watches

From the Greek words Chronos (time) and Graph (writing), a chronograph watch is a countdown clock with between 1 and 3  buttons for starting, stopping, and resetting its functions. When in use, the pusher can record for 30 minutes to 12 hours.

It wasn't until the early 1900s that the chronograph watch became widely known. The aviation industry, which relies heavily on precise timing, found this to be extremely useful. In addition to the military and the Olympic sports community, this high-end timepiece has found favor with the royal navy and underwater vehicle industry sectors after its initial popularity in the aviation industry.

Watchmakers competed for the chance to patent a fully automated version due to its rapid excellence and high demand. To create the first self-winding chronograph, Dubois Depraz teamed up with Breitling, Tag Heuer, and Hamilton.

When Seiko launched the world's first quartz watch, an electronic timepiece, in 1969, the euphoria for this watch was disrupted. But destiny had other plans. President Eisenhower mandated that, due to the expansion of NASA's exploration of space, all test pilots and astronauts would wear a chronograph watch.

Chronograph Advantages:

  • It can save your life if you need to measure time at a critical moment. A good example would be when you have to arrive at an important meeting on time.
  • In addition to its outstanding mechanism, this watch has a number of other features as well.
  • Experts in aviation, navigation and astronautics wear this luxurious watch.
  • The key difference between quartz and chronograph watches is now clear to you.
